Book Launch: Making a Life – Young men on Johannesburg’s urban margins, Hannah Dawson

29 May, 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Free

Making a Life explores how young men in Johannesburg’s informal settlement of Zandspruit navigate unemployment, identity, and belonging. Drawing on 14 months of ethnographic research, Hannah J. Dawson challenges romanticised views of survival on the margins and offers a nuanced look at work, inequality, and social life in urban South Africa.

About the Author
Hannah J. Dawson is a senior lecturer in the Anthropology and Development Studies department at the University of Johannesburg and a visiting researcher at the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
